Having lived in California all my life, I never put much thought as to when it is not appropriate to wear flip flops. I mean, Southern California has pretty mellow weather all year around and other then the occasional rain there is really nothing to worry about. I am quite aware that the weather elsewhere this time of year may not be the best for wearing open-toed shoes, but from the Tweets I have been reading lately it seems like a lot of people may agree with me. Flip flops are comfortable, convenient and perfect acceptable to wear any time of the year… but also keep your health and safety in mind.
After reading The Rules for Wearing Flip-Flops, I have composed my own list of acceptable flip flop wearing etiquette for the flip flop lover.
Flip Flops in Winter
When the temperature drops it doesn’t necessarily mean the feet need to go in hiding, but if there is snow or could be snow on the floor then there should be some thought about warmth. While many would agree that wearing white tube socks under your sandals is a fashion faux pas, here are some cute sock options for keeping your feet warm and still look cute.

Flip Flops in the Work Place
Working for a flip flop company like Flojos it is seen as acceptable dress code to wear flip flops to work, but I would agree that in some work environments this should be a no-no. If you work in an office where people often dress in suits or there is a strong possibility that something heavy can fall on your feet then I strongly urge you to cover up those toes. Want to wear your flips for your commute to and from work… change your shoes before entering the work place so you make a good impression.
Flip Flops at Formal Occasions
Unless the invite strictly states “Beach Attire” I would never wear flip flops to any type of event where you are dressing up, but before you get upset with my statement the keyword here is TO the event. I have been to plenty of weddings, parties and dinners where my flip flops have come along. Flip flops are great for dancing the night away and I think it is much less tacky to wear your sandals while you boogie then to get-down barefoot.
Regardless how you feel about flip flops and when it is alright to wear toe-baring shoes there is one rule that supersedes them all… foot hygiene and appearance. If you are going to be showing off your toes, even in below average temps, do us all a favor and get a pedicure. This way if your feet make it on someone’s Twitter news hopefully it will be followed up with, “and their pedicure looked amazing”.
To any and all the beautiful and tropical beaches of the world…. Not sure where my desktop wallpaper was shoot, but it looks amazing and it makes me want to jet set off everyday.
